# Top-down Brew: Specific gravity conversions

**Purpose:** To convert specific gravity to brix or plato scales.

**Results** *** Waiting for results ***

## Notes

There are several scales used for measuring the amount of dissolved sugar in a solution. Homebrewers typically use specific gravity. Professional brewers use degrees Plato. Wine makers typically use the Brix scale. Brix and Plato values are similar for most beers below 1.070. Please see Wikipedia for a more detailed explanation.

A quick approximation is multiplying Plato or Brix values by 4 will yield the gravity points for specific gravity. For example, 10 Brix is approximately 1.040 specific gravity. Conversely, dividing the gravity points from a specific gravity reading by 4 will yield an approximate Brix/Plato value.
